At an early age, one of my favorite books was about European cathedrals. There was a chapter for each of several of the most famous ones with detailed photos and most interesting, the architectural floor plans. The precision and symmetry of these images fascinated me. “Byzantium” is inspired by the floor plans of some of these great cathedrals. The basic shape is that of a Teutonic Cross. The center is intended to remind one of the view looking up into a central dome. Inside the drawing, in addition to some geometric decorations, are various Celtic knots. I have always loved Celtic art and this drawing contains my earliest attempts to incorporate them into my art.

Product Description

Byzantium is a 14″x17″ pen and ink drawing, drawn using a .25 mm Rapidograph pen and black India ink. The initial design was created using a pencil, compass, ruler and protractor. After creating an initial drawing concept in pencil, I drew all of the detail with ink. All shapes are drawn completely freehand. This drawing is available in 8×10, 11×14, and 16×20 archival quality prints. The 16×20 print has the same dimensions as the original drawing, just printed on slightly larger paper.
