This is the original framed drawing of Byzantium.
At a young age, one of my favorite books was about European cathedrals. There was a chapter for each of several of the most famous ones with detailed photos and most interesting, the architectural floor plans. The precision and symmetry of these images fascinated me. “Byzantium” is inspired by the floor plans of some of these great cathedrals. The basic shape is that of a Teutonic Cross. The center is intended to remind one of the view looking up into a central dome. Inside the drawing, in addition to some geometric decorations, are various Celtic knots. I have always loved Celtic art and this drawing contains my earliest attempts to incorporate them into my art.
